There’s no question about it – Austin traffic can be the pits. For a city so cool and innovative, why are we so far behind in transportation improvements?
It’s true that our urban development is in catch-up mode for the fast-growing population. But, this winter there are quite a few transportation projects breaking ground that you can look forward to. Say ‘AMEN!’ to our 5 favorite improvements:
1. MoPac Improvement Project – an express lane is being built in each direction on MoPac (Loop 1), allowing an uncongested, non-stop option to individual drivers for a small toll, and at no cost to public transit, emergency vehicles, and registered vanpools (we are hoping carpools eventually, too!). Say hello to a better MoPac, scheduled to complete in 2015.
2. Capital MetroRapid – our bus system is getting a makeover to provide faster, more convenient service along two of the busiest travel corridors in Central Texas. Buses will have Priority Lanes and green light access through downtown and include 77 new stations with real-time arrival updates.
3. Austin B-Cycle – the project close to every Austinite’s heart will launch December 21, with 11 stations of comfy red bicycles available for rental any time of day. It’s the perfect supplement to a downtown commuter’s carpool or bus riding routine, and for downtown residents its a great alternative to driving. 40 stations are planned in total and will be completed by the Spring.
4. Project Connect – a high-capacity transit system is being planned to better connect the most traveled corridors in central Austin. This will be a combination of urban rail, regional rail, and the bus and rapid transit lanes mentioned above. Many of the routes and locations are still being decided by City of Austin and Capital Metro (and have been quite the hot debate), so now is the time for residents to weigh in.
Of course, these initiatives will take time, and we’re looking forward to getting extra cars off the road right away by matching rideshares.
5. Carma is running a pilot with the Mobility Authority to offer exclusive toll road discounts to carpoolers. Carpool with the Carma app along 183A or Manor Expressway, and you’ll receive either a portion or a whole toll reimbursement to your TxTag account, based on the number of people in the car. It’s the best way to get where you’re going, faster and more affordably. Register at www.car.ma/austin
