At 16.4%, Hawaii clocked in at # 1 in the USA for % car and vanpools taken to work (2004 American Community Survey)

Ridesharing was started by Ford and the Germans?
In 1914, Ford had been mass-producing the Model T for 6 years, the US economy fell into recession and WWI broke out. This constraint on disposable income and gas imports spurned an entrepreneurial spirit in Los Angeles. Vehicle owners began to pick up streetcar passengers in return for a ‘jitney’ – the 5 cent fare for the streetcar. The idea spread quickly to San Francisco where attendees of the 1914 Panama-Pacific Exposition also used jitneys for transport. The idea spread rapidly across the States and within nine months it had reached the east coast. (For more info, check out this link)
