To Leap or Not to Leap?

Smart card travel has finally come to Dublin, Ireland. It’s called the Leap Card, a name that perfectly reflects its purpose. Commuters are no longer troubled to have the exact change for the bus, and the one card acts as an electronic purse to pay for travel on all modes of public transport. This represents a real revolution for commuting in Dublin.

Leap Card

Avego was appointed by the National Transport Authority to provide an end-to-end smart card ticketing solution for all private bus operators. We help them join the revolution by integrating the Leap Card reader and back-office systems with Avego Futurefleet.

Our first customer, Matthews Coach Hire, started a pilot in December 2011, targeting commuters between Bettystown in Co. Louth and Dublin. The promotion fare turned out to be a big hit. Every day, more and more people are using the Leap Card to pay for their travel. They love it because it’s fast and convenient, and once they are in Dublin they can leap onto any other public transport option with the one single card.

We are still at an early phase of the project. More features will be introduced later this year. We are looking forward to supporting annual passes, monthly tickets (for different operators) and much more on the Leap Card. The Avego system will help the bus operators to take control of their business by introducing and managing different ticket types, reducing the cost of handling cash, gaining greater insight into their operations, differentiating fares, and – most importantly – delighting passengers.
